Tok to Fairbanks, AK--July 2

We only had to travel 207 miles today which wasn't bad except Bob decided we need to leave by 6:30. Ugh!! So by accident I was up by 5am and thought I would write yesterdays blog but couldn't get on the parks wifi and wasn't sure what was going on with my broadband I accomplished nothing except loose sleep. All of us except Dee, I think, were sleepy all day and for what I don't know.

Anyway, we did finally get to see 3 moose right beside the road. They saw them first and told us to go around them so we could get a better look and hopefully a picture. Well I saw them but not a successful picture. It started to rain and trying to take thru the windshield didn't work but at least I saw them. I guess they have had a lot of rain lately and the Johnson River and another one was reall high and they spread out real wide. When they are not that full they just look like very wide mud flats. We did have an exciting view as a hawk came over our coach just barely above the windshield and went right down with his claws onto something on the passenger side ditch. That was quite a moment for me. Unfortunately no one else got to see it.

We stopped at Delta Junction which is the stopping point of the Alaska Highway and the beginning of the Richardson Highway. The Richardson actually begins in Valdez and was finished 20 years before the Al-Can Highway (Alaska Hwy.) There was a Visitor Center there and some interpretive signs talking about the agriculture in the area, and the pipeline. They also had a milepost for the ending of the road and a couple of very large mosquitoes.

Going on we stopped at Rika's Roadhouse for a bite of breakfast which instead turned into lunch since they don't do breakfast. Marvin was just heartbroken. After eating we went walking around the buildings they had on the grounds and it was interesting reading their history. The Tanana River was flowing very full alongside the property and as we crossed the bridge you could see the oil pipeline also crossing above the river. That was our first sight of it.

We also stopped at a place called The Knotty Gift Shop. I guess in the area there is a lot of trees that have burls on them and this guy gets this wood and creates all kinds of things from it. Out in front he has created a moose, toad stools, mosquitoes and other funny animals. If you take in your Milepost book with his ad he will give you a free ice cream cone--I had lemon meringue pie and boy was it good. He has all kinds of things in his store as well as a large room in back that looks like the outdoors and he has probably 15 full size stuffed animals in there. Very nicely done.

Back in the coach and on we go. Our next stop was at the North Pole. That is the name of the little town and Santa was there. If you like Christmas you would love this gift shop. We then went to find a gas station to fill up the coach--we went to a Fred Myers and it is Friday on a holiday weekend. The place was a mad house but we finally got done and off to the River's Edge RV Park. It is the nicest place we we have stayed in a very long time with full electric and all hookup as well as cable. We're in heaven. We hooked up and went to our social hour and just visited with everyone while Dee and Marvin went to do laundry. One of those necessities.

We will have full day activities Sat. & Sun. and then Monday and Tuesday are free days, I think. Hope you all have a wonderful holiday weekend.
